GROUNDWORK

When you have to sit for long periods of time in front of the computer due to work need or if you do it leisurely (chatting or surfing the web, for instance), you must take into account that there is a series of factors which can damage your health.

Lack of movement.
Low level of cardiac and respiratory demand.
Fixing your gaze at short distance over long periods of time.
Ineffectual and energy-demanding postures repeated with time.
Continuous tension in hands and arms due to intensive or inadequate use of the keyboard and mouse.
Isolation, excessive concentration, stress (hypnotic effect).
Decrease in your mental ability (mainly to recall new information), perception of your posture and awareness of your body.

After 3 or 4 hours of this situation your output surely starts decreasing, irritabilty and fatigue make paying attention difficult and damage the so-called work efficiency. Business achievements are undermined because the worker cannot give his best.

When the neuro-muscular co-ordination is twisted, there are imbalances in the muscular chains and reductions which can limit movement and straigthtening. If this persists , it can cause pain due to injury of the soft parts of the locomotion system, or owing to an aggression of sensitive or motor neural endings. That is why they are called repetitive strain injuries.

The consequences are recorded in many studies in the different areas of medicine: fatigue, irritability, severe headache (migraine), dizziness, circulatory and neuro-vegetative disorders (autonomous nervous system), visual exhaustion, itching or burning of the eyes, tearfulness, pain and irritation in the eye, physical pain, muscular contraction, tingling (hands, arms, shoulders, neck, et cetera), carpian tunnel syndrome, et cetera.

Not only do these pathologies interfere with your efficience at work but also we are facing absenteeism, medical treatments and additional expenses.

Is the computer to blame for all these ills? How could that be? It´s only a tool, isn´t it?

Technological advancements can be useful for society and improve the quality of living as long as you take into account how much, when, how and what to use them for. Since the "homo sapiens" has not yet mutated to "homo cyber" and our body is the real instrument we use to communicate and make contact with the virtual world through the computer, it is important to bear in mind how we do it and for how long and also whether we are respecting the ancestral laws of nature that still rule human beings in spite of technological progress.

Multiple studies and experts at different fields (physicians, traumatologists, ophtalmologists and physiotherapists) agree in the need of paying attention to these aspects:

Adequate enviroment, furniture, equipment and lighting.

Pausing and resting for some minutes every half an hour.

Prevention and learning about work risks.

Considering that prevention is the most effective and cheapest method, this programme aims to develop insight, awareness and taking some time to identify your motion needs and its possible compensations.

It is important for you to see your physician regularly, especially your ophtalmologist, for a check-up.

Simple and easy-to-learn exercises are developed (lasting 2 to 4 minutes), to unblock joints, help circulation, make up for the visual effort and the overload of muscular activity in different areas.

Changing old habits is up to you, giving yourself the permission to stop and getting ready to them without fear of ridicule.

Regarding the adequate surroundings, furniture and lighting, basic hints will be provided to reaffirm information published widely on newspapers, magazines, web pages, etcetera.
